However, the drive for personal sexual emancipation that occurred in that era was inseparable, ideologically and practically, from liberationist movements for blacks, women, the poor, and from nationalist struggles throughout the world against the vestiges of colonialism.

Among the Cherokee in the southeastern United States, women had enjoyed prominence as farmers and trappers prior to the appearance of white settlers.
